Spiritual Accounting
Introduction

Adapted by Rabbi Chaim Faecher from
Sefer Chesbon Hanefesh

Accounting

12. Each morning, say the week's keyword out loud. Pause for a while and consider how to make use of it during the day. Carefully consider how many activities - spiritual and physical - you must attend to that day. Schedule your time in such a way that you will carry out all of them in their correct order, each at its appropriate time. Be then diligent to complete them according to plan. Do this every day.

13. Every night before going to sleep, think about how you spent your day, each and every activity with all its details, one after the other, from morning until night. Determine whether you met resistance or were unable to improve any of the traits. All setbacks are recorded in pencil on the appropriate weekly chart with a small dot in the square associated with the particular day of the week. If you experienced two or three repeated setbacks, mark accordingly two or three dots in the same square. With every dot, think how or why you were not successful. Use this insight to become wiser in the future. Repeat this entire process each night of that week.

14. At the end of every week (Motza'ey Shabbos), record in ink the sum total of "setbacks" for the week. Do this using the proper quarterly chart in the column associated with that particular week.

15. At the end of thirteen weeks, mark down the sum total of "setbacks" during that quarter in the fourteenth column mentioned above.

16. You may want to reuse the weekly charts in your old notebook for the upcoming quarter of the year. If so, erase all the pencil marks. You will only need a permanent record of weekly and quarterly "setback" totals for safekeeping.

17. At the end of the first year, record the total of the entire year's "setbacks" in the fifteenth column of the fourth quarterly chart.

18. With the end of every year, review in detail each of the quarterly charts as well as the corresponding "total" columns. With the help of HaShem, you will see clear improvement from week to week, quarter to quarter, year to year. Know that the Al-mighty acknowledges and endorses all of your efforts. Because you desire and initiate efforts to change your ways, He helps and guides you along the true path of return.

19. Continue with one set of attributes until the "setbacks" for a particular trait are erased. In its place, insert a different quality in need of treatment. The empty rows will be signs of your purity of heart and your soul's domination over your body's desires -- an essential duty in your service of HaShem. The more success you have, the greater will be your peace of mind. You will serve the Al-mighty in a state of joy all the days of your life. Then you will receive the Eternal Reward of your labor.
